The classroom wall: how a teacher sees 30 screens that no one else can touch

We built the RooF classroom so the teacher sees everything, and a supervisor cannot change anything, even on purpose.

The RooF team

The idea

Every student gets a full cloud computer, up to 30 seats per class. A browser on a phone or an old computer is enough.1

The wall

The teacher sees the students’ screens live in one grid on their page, opens any screen full-size, and can end a student’s computer.

View-only, for real

The supervisor link does not just hide buttons. The server itself drops every key press, mouse move and paste coming from it, so modifying the browser does not help.4

A network per class

A class’s computers sit on their own private network that other classes and rooms cannot see.5

Who pays, and when

  • The teacher chooses: pay for every seat at $0.05 per seat-hour, or each student pays.2
  • Students can start a computer only while the class is live; it opens for 60 minutes by default.3

Today’s limits

The wall shows light live snapshots, not a full stream per screen, and classes run on Linux computers only for now.

Sources for these numbers

  1. Classroom seat limit on the RooF server
  2. Classroom seat hourly price as set on the RooF server
  3. RooF server: a teacher opens a class for 60 minutes by default; allowed range 10 to 240 minutes
  4. The RooF server drops every key, mouse move and paste that comes from a supervisor link, even from a modified browser
  5. RooF session orchestrator: every room gets its own private network; rooms cannot see each other
